Fourof a Kind

4 of a kind as thename implies consists of 4 cards with thesame rank. Not as rare as a straight flush but stillrelatively few and far between.

Full House

A full house is achieved when you hold 3 cards of one rank combined with 2 cards ofanother rank. In this example we have Aces full of Kings. (Alsocalled a 'boat')

Flush

A flush is 5 cards of the samesuit. Notice that unlike the straight flush example from above,this time, we only need to make 5 of the same suit without anyrestriction on the ordering of the cards. In this example, the highestcard determines the value relative to any other flush. ie.. here wehave an 'ace high flush' which is the best flush you canmake.

Straight

A straight is 5 cards of anysuit in a consecutive order. The lowest value straight isa A-2-3-4-5 and the highest value straight has 10-J-Q-K-A. Note that the ace can serve as the lowest or highestcard but it does not 'wrap around' meaning that you cantmake a straight with Q-K-A-1-2. Also the A-2-3-4-5straight is the only exception where an ace is not the highestranked card.

Threeof a Kind

Three of akind is 3 cards of the same rank. Also referred to as 'trips' or a 'set'

TwoPair

2 cards of 1 rankplus 2 or another. You may have noticed that rankcombinations is the essence of a poker hand. The suit is onlyrelevant in the flush. Everything else is dependant onrank. So basically, it does not matter what the suit of a combination is. The only time you will pay any attention tothe suit of a card is when you are dealing with a flush.

Pair

A pair is thelowest combination and the most common hand you will deal with inpoker. Somebody somewhere has at least a pair of something. The mostvaluable pair is AA and the lowest pair is 22.

HighCard

If none of theabove combinations is present, the best hand is simply the highestsingle card available. In this example we have a 'high card ace'

Breaking a tie
In the case of a flush or a straight, the combo with thehighest ranked card is the winner. ie.. Ace high flush beats aking high flush
In the case of a full house, the player with the higher dominant (3card) combination is ahead. ie Aces full of twos beats kings fullof Queens
If the ranked cards are the same, the kicker (card not part ofthe hand) is used to break a tie.

If none of theabove breaks a tie, the pot is split.

Players compare five card hands against each other to determine who wins. A player with a Royal Flush has a better hand than a player with a Full House, for example. Below is a list of standard combinations ranked from best to worst.

Five card sequence, from 10 to the Ace in the same suit. A royal flush is a combination of a flush and a straight ending in the Ace high card. So all the cards are of the same suit, consecutive and have the Ace high card.

All four cards of the same index. Four cards of the same value such as four jacks or four 7's represent the second strongest poker hand. This hand beats everything except a Straight Flush.
